Make Way For Joy

Close your eyes and picture a tranquil morning and afternoon, and you can carry that peacefulness throughout the day. I spend an extra 10 minutes every morning before I get out of bed focusing on my intention for the day, something with purpose and calm to guide my actions. Today my intention is:  I am attracted and connected to the colorful wonder of surprise.

Find Your Source of Joy

Look for something that makes your body and mind feel so wonderful that you start to crave it. Whether it is cooking a great meal, heading for a bike ride in the woods or going fishing or learning to paint, start giving yourself the healthy pleasure. This summer I am creating a new garden in front of my house under the pine trees. It gives me exercise, the smell of nature and a tranquil peace when I look at my new creation and check if the flowers have changed each day.

Be Grateful

Develop a mindset of gratitude and you will find your inner peace and the feeling of real freedom. Gratitude also helps release any troubles and brings you closer to healing. Stepping out on the deck for just five minutes each morning and then again at lunch is when I appreciate the birds singing, the beauty of nature and then focus on what I am grateful for each day. It only takes a moment and can entirely shift your mindset. Even when my teen tries my patience, if I step away and focus on what in our relationship is going well, I can return to our interaction with some humor and it always lightens both of our outlooks.

Let Your Soul Catch Up

To slow down many of us indulge in overeating, smoking or drinking. Meditation or kicking back and doing nothing gives your soul a chance to catch up. Many times during the day, I stop and stand up. Then take three deep breaths, breathe in with peace and breathe out any upset, blame, stress or worry. This grounds you in the sentient part of your soul.

Listen To Your Heart

It’s easy to feel you are too busy or trapped by your circumstances. Quiet yourself and ask, “What do I want?” Then be sure and stay quiet and listen for the answer. Many of the clients I coach in the One Zone are looking for that answer. Sometimes it takes help to focus on what your heart wants you to do. And when you identify your passions, then design a life around your values, it becomes a life of real freedom.

Be Patient With Yourself

Set realistic goals, especially as you go through life changes like divorce. Planning to do too much at one time can sabotage the best intentions and you’ll give up after a day or two. Break down your goal, like losing weight or beginning an exercise program into small chunks and start with 10 minutes a day. When you make it through four days, adjust by one minute until you make it four more days. Tracking these changes helps me to not take on too much and to experience the triumph of results when I see my chart.

Let Go of Being Right

Be willing to relinquish your opinion. This is critical as you navigate a divorce or co-parenting. Instead of forcing advice on someone or arguing to make a point, ask yourself, “Is this really so important?” Not only can letting go help you hold on to your peace of mind, it can also bring a new calm into your relationships. When you have a choice of being right or being kind, you are a lot better off being kind.

Inspire Your Children

Playing with your children, no matter what age is the most treasured time. Nature walks, camping, arts and crafts or board games, and video games. These are an opportunity for you to introduce topics of conversation. I actually enjoy the time in the car with my teenager as he learns to drive. It is the best opportunity to capture his full attention and our talks are those that make an impact. Remember, you are the leader and children absorb how we live. No matter what you say, if your actions and behavior don’t match your words, the message isn’t congruent. Be clear and live by example.
